The Samsung Gear VR 2016 model was released alongside the Samsung Galaxy Note 7, and features minor changes. The SM-R323 model comes with an additional field of view, increased cushioning, a flat trackpad, and changes to the cover and body of the device to reduce glare. The model also utilizes USB-C connector. USB-C connector is slightly larger than the micro-B connector. It enables reversible plug orientation. Data speeds have been increased to 10Gbps.

Gear VR works with 2015 or newer Samsung smartphones with Android Lollipop 5.0.1 and newer. This edition has improved ergonomics and a redesigned touchpad for easier navigation.
